What is TIUGA?

A TIUGA is a Tank In an UnderGround Area. Facilities with a TIUGA must follow the guidelines of APSA (the California Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act) and must satisfy SPCC Plan (Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure Plan) requirements.

Do you have a TIUGA?

  • Under APSA, a TIUGA applies to tanks or other containers with a volume of 55 gallons or more.
  • These tanks or containers are used to store petroleum or other regulated liquids.
  • The storage tanks are located on or above the surface of the floor in a structure with at least 10 percent below the ground surface.
  • Below ground surfaces include, but are not limited to, basements, cellars, shafts, pits, or vaults.
